The revamped competition sees Rounds 1 and 2 replaced by two mini leagues and the top two progressing to the semi-final.
Todays’ draw confirmed the two groups, creating an exciting mix of games which will be played between 1st September and 1st December. Both North clubs landed in Group 1, while last season’s top four have been split, Cardiff City and Swansea also in Group 1 and Cardiff Met and Port Talbot in Group 2. Group 2 are joined by promoted Aberystwyth, Cyncoed and Briton Ferry and Abergavenny completes Group 1.
The competition was launched in 2013/14 as an additional chance for silverware and previously was a straight knockout, however with ten teams the opening stages were unbalanced and didn’t offer the match time desired for player development. In the new format each team will play twice home and twice away, guaranteeing four games in the competition before the semi-final and with plenty of points on offer there's much to play for.
The full WPWL Cup fixture programme can be found here and the opening games to be played on 1st September are Abergavnney v Llandudno; Swansea v Rhyl; Cardiff Met v Briton Ferry and Port Talbot v Aberystwyth.
