Cardiff Met Return Home as European Record Breakers

This season’s WPWL representatives in the UEFA Women’s Champion’s League, Cardiff Met WFC flew back to the UK yesterday (Wednesday 14th Aug) with the best record for any Welsh Women’s team in European Cup Competition.

The club were in Slovenia for the UWCL, being placed in Group 3 alongside hosts WFC Pomurje, seeded Hibs from Scotland and Georgians, FC Nike, for a nine-day qualifying mini-tournament. The stakes were high with just one club able to secure a spot in the next round of 32, potentially coming up against the elite of Europe such as Barcelona, Man City, Bayern Munich or holders PSG.

Met started the competition well, with a 1-0 win over WFC Pomurje, however they succumbed 2-1 to Hibs in the second game. As Hibs had already beaten FC Nike in their opening match, with the head-to-head result considered before goal difference in the UWCL, the loss meant the Met would not be able to progress regardless of their final result on matchday three.

There was however still something to play for, as the long-standing record for women’s club football in Wales was still there to be broken, with Met needing to win their last game against FC Nike by more than two goals. It was a challenge that the players were keen to rise to and once the first goal was scored just before the half hour mark, more quickly followed; the only blemish a last-minute consolation for the Georgians leaving the final score 5-1.

The results saw Cardiff Met finish second in their group on six points, with a goal difference of +4, beating the previous record for a Welsh women’s club side in European competition set in 2006/07 in the UEFA Women’s Cup by three goals.
