The draw for the UWCL Qualifying round was made on 21st June, with Cardiff Met set to play Hibs Women from Scotland, Georgian team FC Nike and tournament hosts Pomurje Beltinci of Slovenia. The competition takes place between 7th and 13th August.
It is anticipated that seeded Hibs will put on a strong show, however both Beltinci and FC Nike excelled in their local leagues last season and could be tough prospects, Beltinci in particular who won the SZNL league without dropping a point. Met however can take confidence from their own success, winning the Welsh domestic treble in 2018/19, a feat only achieved once before when they won the triple crown in 2013/14.
Despite the domestic dominance, the club has not stood still, adding three new players from the US to their squad; midfielders Amy Long and Micaela Milavec and Alexis Rienks in defence, plus Emily Allen has returned to midfield after a stint with Oxford United WFC, along with Sophie Hancocks, also in midfield, and forward Jodie Passmore both from WPWL rivals Swansea City.
Met’s pre-season campaign began in June, with games against FAWNL Division 1 sides Cheltenham Town Ladies and Buckland Athletic LFC, Met came out on top in both matches 3-0. More recently there was a sterner test against Cardiff City Ladies, who play a tier higher, and Cardiff Met were unlucky to lose 3-2 with the winner scored in the final minutes of the game. Cardiff City Women will be the last friendly tomorrow night (Wednesday), before Met head off to Slovenia next week.
