WPWL League Cup QF - Preview

Cup action returns as League Cup reaches QF stage

It's a break from league action this week, as the WPWL League Cup reaches the Quarter-Final stage.

Three of the ties see teams playing the sides they faced in the League last weekend, giving Abergavenny, Rhyl and Port Talbot a quick chance to respond to defeats against Cardiff City, Llandudno and Swansea respectively.

Holders Cyncoed meanwhile host neighbours Cardiff Met in a rematch of last season's final. The Mighty Oaks came through the First Round with a 2-0 victory over Briton Ferry Llansawel, but lost the first Cyncoed derby of the season 3-1 on the opening weekend.

Cardiff City became only the second team to beat Abergavenny this season last week, their 2-0 win at Pen-y-Pound. Boss Joel Hutton told the club website that he was really impressed with the performance, saying his side showed they could be clinical when required. They make the short trip east again this week, and will be looking to go one better than last year, where they lost 3-1 in the Quarters to Ritchie Jeremiah's side.

For Port Talbot, it's a hope that home comforts will provide a boost after last week's 5-1 loss away at Swansea. They make a return to Victoria Road for the first time this season, following an issue with the playing surface. Swansea will offer a big test though, and they'll be particularly motivated to progress in the competition, given that their defence of the FAW Women's Cup ended at Cardiff Met a fortnight ago.

One of the two northern sides will make it through to the Semis. Last year Rhyl reached that stage, losing to the eventual winners Cyncoed. They lost heavily at the Giant Hospitality Stadium last week, a result which saw Llandudno go above Rhyl in the table. Both will be looking to get a good result that can put some momentum into their season as the winter break approaches.
