Orchard WPWL Clubs in FAW Women's Cup action

After a successful weekend for the Orchard WPWL clubs, seven teams were in the pot for the Round Two draw.

It was an eventual day in the Women's Cup, with 90 goals and one penalty shoot-out; Swansea City, won 13-0, scoring the most against tier two Dafen Welfare. In the two all Orchard WPWL ties, last season's Cup winners Cardiff Met beat Cyncoed 6-2 and current league leaders Cardiff City Women claimed a 6-1 victory to knock out Briton Ferry Llansawel.

Elsewhere, Port Talbot beat Swansea University 3-1 and Abergavenny Women put on a decent show away at Merthyr Town winning 7-2. Aberystwyth Town needed extra time and penalties to get past Cascade, after 120 minutes it was Aberystwyth's 'keeper Ffion Ashman who made two crucial saves in the shootout to secure the second-round spot, with the final score 1-1AET (3-1pens). In the North the match between Corwen and Llandundo had to be postponed due to a water-logged pitch and will now take place on Sunday 27th October.

The teams were joined in the Second Round by tier two clubs, Bethel Ladies, Llanfiar Utd, Denbigh, Rhyl, Barry Town, Cardiff Bluebelles and Caldicot Town, with tier three represented by Aberdare Town and Connah's Quay Nomads. Corwen, of the North Wales Women's League, can also progress if they beat Llandudno in their rearranged game.

The draw for the Second Round took place this morning (21st October) at the FAW headquarters; with the pots split regionally North/South there was a guarantee of one all WPWL tie and Cardiff City Women once again have to face a tier one opponent, this time playing Aberystwyth at home. Port Talbot welcome Barry Town, Swansea are also at home with Aberdare the visitors, while Abergavenny are away to Cardiff Bluebelles and Cardiff Met have a trip to Caldicot Town. The winner of Corwen/ Llandudno will be at home to Llanfair.
